The defending state/section/conference champion Eden Prairie High School girls lacrosse team had no problem winning this year’s Section 6 tournament, outscoring its three opponents (Cooper, Chaska and Armstrong) by a combined score of 50-6.
But don’t expect the Eagles rest on their laurels.
“It doesn’t really matter what happens yesterday,” said Co-Head Coach Judy Baxter; “what matters is what you do tomorrow.”
In other words, look forwards, not backwards.
But for those of us that can’t do that, it bears mentioning that Eden Prairie has already defeated two of this year’s four state tournament teams.
They knocked off the No. 2 seeded Blake Bears 11-5 and No. 3 seeded Bloomington Kennedy Eagles 11-1.
“That doesn’t matter,” said Baxter, “as I’m guessing they’ll give us a different look if we get to play them again.”
The team they didn’t get to face, and not for a lack of trying, was Totino-Grace, Tuesday’s opponent.
“We played them last year,” said Baxter, “so we kind of know what they do.”
Did they ever, beating the Eagles (three of the four state tournament teams are named Eagles) 19-6.
A couple hours later, Blake would defeat Kennedy 7-2.
As a result, this year’s championship game is rematch of a rematch.
Got it?
Six weeks ago, Eden Prairie defeated Blake in a non-conference game; a year ago, Eden Prairie defeated Blake in the state championship game.
So yes, the two teams are very familiar with each other.
Still, Baxter expects a new look, or at the very least, a new twist.
Blake can expect the same.
This year’s state championship game is scheduled for Thursday at 8 p.m. at Wayzata High School.
