First 'green' transformer will be in Eden Prairie
May 22, 2008 - 1:19pm — Karla
Eden Prairie will be home to the first 100 percent renewable soy oil transformer in Minnesota, according to a news release from Xcel Energy. The company "is the first major utility in the country to make the switch to this new environmentally friendly technology. A crew will be installing the transformer at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, the release said, at 12251 Sunnybrook Road. "Beginning this month, all new transformers in communities throughout Xcel Energy’s eight-state service territory will use 100 percent renewable soy oil. In its first year, the switch will involve approximately 13,000 transformers. Soy oil will be used in all new single-phase pole and pad-mounted transformers for residential and some light commercial applications," the release said. "Xcel Energy partnered with Cooper Power Systems to implement this change and will use its Envirotemp FR3 fluid, which is made with food-grade soybean oil as its base. Minneapolis-based Cargill produces the soy oil from domestic crops." The release said the oil is biodegradable, nontoxic and recyclable. It replaces petroleum-based mineral oil.
