In honor of Minnesota’s 150th birthday a Free admission to all 26 historic sites and museums of the Minnesota Historical Society is being offered to the public on Sunday, June 1st. The historic W.W. Mayo House and the Mayoview History Center with Gift Shop at 118 and 112 N. Main St., Le Sueur, will be open free to the public on Sunday, June 1st from 12 to 4 p.m. Refreshments will be served.
The small Gothic-style Mayo House was built by Dr. William W. Mayo in 1859. It was the birthplace of Dr. William James Mayo in 1861. Dr. Mayo and his two sons, William James and Charles Horace Mayo founded the world renowned Mayo Clinic. Three generations of the Carson Nesbit Cosgrove family of Green Giant Company history lived in the home. The house is warmly furnished to the 1860 time period.
The Mayoview History Center features a video presentation about the Mayo family and the birth of the Mayo Clinic, exhibits on the Cosgrove family and the home’s Green Giant connection, a display about The Mothers Sculpture and information on the years the Mayo Home served the community as its public library. The Center also houses the Then and Now Gift Shop with books, memorabilia and souvenirs available including Green Giant collectibles and souvenirs.
The W.W. Mayo House is open Thursday – Saturdays from 12 to 4 p.m. in June and September through November. Extended hours are offered in July and August, Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The home is owned by the Minnesota Historical Society and operated by the Mayo House Interpretive Society.
