And, since we're on the subject of comfort food, does anyone have any of their own seasonal recipes they'd like to add?

This was the first time I'd had an opportunity to try lefse. It's very good. I think I'll still pass on trying the lutefisk.

Great recipes! I'll have to try sandbakkels. I'm Norwegian and my husband is Swedish and I've never had one.

Marshmallows and bread? I'm not so sure. I like buttery bread. I like small doses of marshmallows when smothered in chocolate and graham cracker.

But biscuits?

My son used to call these "triangle treats." We made them often when he was in preschool, and he shared the recipe for the preschool cookbook.

It also was featured in a Kids 'N' Stuff feature about two years ago, I believe. MMMM tasty, melty marshmallows and buttery bread!

I would start with Spanish,

I would start with Spanish, given that we have many Spanish speaking people in our society. I know that the "Immersion method" is taught in many schools, but I am concerned that children also develop good skills in the English language, too. Both written and spoken communication skills are critical to success in many ways. Spelling and grammar are very critical skills, too.

When I taught English to

When I taught English to students at the secondary level in Thailand, they had been exposed to the language since they were third-graders.

In a world that gets smaller by the day, I think it's important for students to learn a second or third or fourth language. And it's important to target them when they're young -- that's when they're able to easily soak up the language.

I would suggest Spanish and Chinese.

I agree with "Learn English

I agree with "Learn English First"! The administration needs to focus on providing the basics for all of our children. Let's stop trying to compete with the neighboring school districts and focus on making our children strong in the "core" subjects before adding additional non-essential courses. We have many ESL students who need additional help with learning the "English" language. If we focus on bringing their language skills up to par, then this will help lower the achievement gap. Adding another language will only widen the achievement gap. Unless of course the administration is willing to give all of the testing to students in their native language.

Learn English First!!!

I think we should concentrate on learning how to write and speak in English. I am so tired of hearing "like" used 2-3 times per sentence!

Our children are way behind other countries in the core subjects and we don't need to add another subject to their day. Besides, do we have enough money in the budget to hire language teachers?

Maybe if the school day was longer I would consider it. I think high school is the appropriate time to learn another language.
