The story of “Wiil Waal”

The story of “Wiil Waal” may be a familiar folktale to Somalis, but through the Somali Bilingual Book Project, others can share in the tale. It is one of the latest folktales to be translated and published as a children’s book thanks to a partnership between the Minnesota Humanities Center and Hennepin County Library system.
Saturday, the Eden Prairie Library held a Somali Book Festival to highlight the work of the Somali Bilingual Book Project. This was the third annual Somali book festival and other books to come out of the project were also highlighted, like “The Lion’s Share” or “Qayb Libaax.” The books are written in both English and Somali.

According to the Minnesota Humanities Center Web site, “Due to the lack of existing culturally and linguistically appropriate children’s books, the Humanities Center expanded its Somali Bilingual Initiative to include the publication of four traditional Somali folktales, never before appearing in individual, fully illustrated children’s books.” The books include “The Lion’s Share” (2006); “Dhegdheer, A Scary Somali Folktale” (2006); “Wiil Waal” (2007); and “The Travels of Igal Shidad” (2008).
