Here's one of the letters that appeared in the print edition this week:

I oppose the city’s attempt to save Bent Creek Golf course from being sold. It’s private property. It’s not owned by the city. The city has no right to spend the taxpayers’ money on a legal fight that has no public benefit. There is no benefit for the citizens of Eden Prairie if this land is saved. I can’t enjoy the land unless I buy a private membership. I can’t legally park or even walk on or visit the property unless I buy a private membership. Why should my money be used to save this land when it has no public access? The wealthy landowners living on the golf course should use their own money and resources if they want to save this land. Not the taxpayers who can’t benefit from it. It’s a private matter, not public.

[City Manager] Scott Neal and others have shown no interest in saving land in the past – that could be added to parks for every citizen to enjoy if they choose. Why now when the land in question is privately owned are we willing to spend millions? And where was the city’s wallet when true undeveloped land was being sold to any builder? There was no cry of “Save open spaces” then like there is now. The city refused land it was offered to add on to parks, and land to create new parks, ball fields and more.

Take the millions of dollars this lawsuit will cost the taxpayers and spend it on property tax relief. Fix the lousy roads in this city. Spend it on something that benefits all taxpayers, not just a select few who live on a private golf course. And when this is all over, guess what? The city will say it’s out of money and needs to raise taxes. You just watch.

Larry Peterson

Eden Prairie

The city is discussing rezoning Bent Creek Golf Course, officially designating it "golf course."
