Three weeks ago, the Minnesota State High School League board unanimously approved a change in its transfer rules. The new rule would make students ineligible for varsity competition for one year if they transfer school, without a change of address, after the ninth grade. The old rule said students could transfer once without penalties; subsequent transfers would then result in a period of ineligibility of half the varsity season.
Although the change was not yet a done deal as it hadn’t been voted upon by the MSHSL’s representative assembly, it appeared as if it would pass.
This week, both the house and senate introduced bills allowing for immediate eligibility for students transferring schools.
In a nutshell, the MSHSL is attempting to tighten the rule while the state legislature is trying to loosen the rule.
What, if anything should be done?
