Is it time for the Minnesota State High School League to reexamine how it conducts its state tournaments? Do we want a state tournament that’s representative of Minnesota or do we want one that features Minnesota’s best teams? This year’s Section6AA girls hockey tournament begs the question as the state’s top three teams, Eden Prairie, Edina, and Benilde-St. Margaret’s, compete in the same section, meaning only one of those teams will advance to the state tournament. Similar scenarios happen in other sports. Is it time for a change or does this competition make qualifying for a state all the more special?
